About a month ago I posted about the need to have a blog in a post called: Focus or Fail: Blog Marketing.

Have you done anything about it? I’ve been thinking about possible barriers to getting started with your blog. Let’s discuss it and I’ll provide a possible solution to each.

Barriers to Blogging (really just excuses):

1. I just don’t have the IT resources or the tech know how to get a blog setup.
2. I just don’t have the time to blog.
3. I’m scared about what people will think about my writing.
4. I’m just not a very good writer.
5. I don’t know what to write about (finding your voice).

Possible Solutions to Blogging:

1. For now just get a free blog from Google Blogger or from WordPress–these are both completely free and will import nicely in the future to your server (when you’re ready).
2. This post took 15 minutes to write. If you really don’t have 15 minutes a few times per week, well you have bigger problems than not blogging, and I feel sad for you!
3. Me too! I think we’re all that way, just remember that for the first year or so not many people will be reading what you write anyway! Oh, and don’t be a pansy.
4. Who is really?  J.R.R. Tolkien? – we can’t all be him. Get over it. You can only get better at writing by writing. Remember that the first Harry Potter book was simplistic and poorly written, but the story was compelling. Moral of the story: only write about compelling things. The later Harry Potter books were both compelling and well-written. Good writing takes time.
5. First off, if what you are going to write about doesn’t move you emotionally, don’t write about it. To find stuff to write about, use Google Blog Search to find other bloggers in your industry and write posts in response to their posts.
