Marketing is supposed to be the fun part of running a business, and hopefully it is for you. By mixing marketing creativity with your expertise in an industry you quickly differentiate your business from your competitors and begin to get new and old customers’ attention. Here are some examples and ideas to help get you going.
Brainstorm with employees, customers and friends
Write down their perceptions of your business, industry and products. Then have some fun. How do Heating & Air companies dispose of old furnaces? (Insert video fun here) How does a dentist clean his teeth? (Insert video fun here) What does an attorney really do to get ready for a case? (Insert educational video series here).
Buy a creative and memorable domain name
A domain name is such a simple thing that is commonly overlooked. Salisbury Homes was a Utah home builder that did a big marketing push with the tagline “Rent Stinks so buy a Salisbury Home”. Which is more memorable, RentStinks.com or SalisburyHomesofUtah.com? A creative and memorable domain name that forwards to your website is well worth the $10 a year.
Be creative and knowledgeable at the same time
WillItBlend is one of my favorite marketing efforts of all time. The creativity lies in the recording of things being blended to bits in a powerful, industry leading Blendtec blender. Let’s be honest, a commercial blender isn’t the sexiest thing on the planet to talk about or market but somehow the folks at Blendtec were able to mix creativity with expertise in showing the world that not only will their blender blend any type of food but it will also blend an iPhone, Air Soft Gun, Tiki Torches, and even Chuck Norris. Can your business do something similar? Of course it can. A creative and memorable domain name costs $10 a year and a YouTube channel is free. Now let’s go have some fun getting new customers attention.

Great thoughts, Chris. I wish more companies thought as creatively as you. Not only do fun and wacky things get a lot of word-of-mouth, they also make for fantastic linkbait! There is so much ad noise out there – the only stuff I pay attention to is creative/funny promotions.
