Everyone is looking for the silver bullet with linkbuilding – how to create a process where you can easily, quickly, cheaply, and reliably create links that count and make a difference in your rankings? I’ll tell you that there is no golden gun (James Bond reference, anyone?) for getting awesome links.

Scalable vs. Effective

In general, the higher the quality the link, the harder it is to obtain. On the other side of the scale, the more easily you can reliably build links, the less those links are going to be worth.

Making Non-scalable Activities Scalable

As you create processes for things that normally take longer amounts of time, you can combine tasks and share time to make any single good task more feasible to do larger quantities more cheaply.

Tackle your linkbuilding like Henry Ford and compartmentalize it. For example, if part of your linkbuilding plan is to write once a day on your blog with awesome content to get the attention of the industry, I can guarantee you that within a year you will burn out if you’re completing all aspects and writing yourself. Instead, assemble an excited team of people willing to take on responsibility of the project. This will give your time to come up with great ideas and content, and provide tolerances for meeting goes if someone takes a vacation or gets sick.

Assuming that you don’t have a team of experts in your field with perfect English overseas that charges you $2/hr to write your blog posts, it’s pretty hard to scale the writing of guest posts.

Now to the Point

Now, I know that you’re probably reading this post to figure out how to do your linkbuilding in a more scalable fashion – and I’m sorry, you’re totally not going to get it. I will tell you that whenever you try to pay less attention to your linkbuilding efforts, you aren’t going to like the results from them.

Compartmentalize and streamline your efficiency as much as possible, but never get to the point where you are letting quality drop. The number of links you have isn’t nearly as important as the quality of those same links.

Always plan to make the best use of your time, but don’t ever let that affect your linkbuilding efforts. Google is very good at detecting spammy links, and the 550 algorithm changes last year proves that.
